Here’s the thing, Savannah has a lot of great dining options, as well as a lot of over-hyped spots. It’s not unique in that way, but with enough trial and error you can find the hidden gems of cheap, delicious eats in the Savannah area. Downtown is heavily touristed, which sets you up for a roller coaster of emotions when you’re seeking a place to eat. You know when you’re with a group and no one can decide what they want to eat and the Venn diagram of 1,000 circles comes out? What’s closest? What cuisine do I want? What looks like it won’t be too expensive? I don’t have a solution for navigating that dilemma! The point is, sometimes you don’t have time to do all of the research needed to find a great meal because you’re standing in the middle of the sidewalk, at work, driving, in class, etc.
Life is happening and you’re hungry.
I learned quickly that you really get what you pay for in Savannah. It doesn’t matter if you’re getting a latte, haircut, ice cream or car wash. The higher end places deliver time and time again. BUT, this list is to point out the anomalies of the Savannah area… The shining needles in the haystack of poor customer service and quality… This list is for the no-nonsense, consistent meals that will keep you going back.
This list is going to start at the riverfront and work its way south. It’s a surprisingly well spaced map, with each spot being about 1.5 to 2.5 miles apart, covering a variety of neighborhoods. You’ll notice that it’s all places that specialize in handhelds.
When you’re looking to grab something to eat after a busy day, there’s no shame in not wanting to use a fork.
1) Le Bahn Cafe- 36 Barnard St.
The only downtown spot on the list is Le Bahn. The first time I ordered was in a rush between classes and holy cow did it change the game. I was able to order online and pick up in under ten minutes. Le Bahn is such a great option if you’re downtown for the day, traveling on a budget, or just want a fantastic bahn mi sandwich. They also have sushi rolls, with 6/7 being under $10 (the Philadelphia roll breaks the bank at $10.95). I prefer the tofu bahn mi, which sits tight at $8, but the chicken and pork options are $10 even. There’s even a couple rice bowl options within the cash limit also. This spot has a great selection for under $10, which is admirable given its location.
2) The Cuban Window- 1116 Abercorn St.

This place is the definition of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. When my girlfriend and I first rolled up, she thought I was taking her to breakfast at a gas station. And I was. You roll through the pumps and park in front of this unassuming storefront and immediately smell the delicious aromas coming from within. Inside, you’re greeted with neon colors and checkered floors in a traditional Miami theme. You post up on one of their retro stools, sip a cafe cubano, and order a selection of delicious empanadas and croquettes, which each are under $4/$5. Still under $10, the pan con lechon or the ham & cheese sandwich are great options, with the classic Cuban sandwich only breaking the budget by $1.
3) Yia Yia’s Kitchen- 3113 Habersham St.
When I first moved to Savannah, I would ride my scooter by Yia Yia’s Kitchen every morning and afternoon on my way to and from class. I was always tempted to stop by, until one afternoon I finally gave in. Sitting down to eat at Yia Yia’s felt like being served by a Greek grandma I’ve never had. Not only is it a great place for a gyro, but there's a whole marketplace to buy imported cheeses, wines, confections, and more. This is a one stop shop for all of your Greek cuisine needs. Every single one of their gyros is under $10. Falafel, chicken, lamb, beef, you name it, it’ll be perfectly seasoned, topped with fresh ingredients and served to you wrapped in a warm pita. Eating here is like getting a hug. They also have hot dogs, personal pizzas, hot sub sandwiches, spanakopita, and other Greek favorites, all for under $10.
4) Baldino’s Giant Jersey Subs- 5815 Waters Ave.
Don’t let the name fool you, Baldino’s is a 100% Georgia based franchise. Initially founded in 1975 in North Carolina by a New Jersey native, Baldino’s has 17 locations throughout the state. There are four in Savannah alone, but this one is my go-to. Aside from the fresh baked bread and sliced meats, walking into this Baldino's feels like time traveling. The company was founded in the 70’s and their interior decoration has not changed since. Yellowed menu board, wood paneling, excessive indoor plants. There are not many places that stand the tests of time against the ever-increasing minimalism and modernity in our current overpriced sandwich world. Though they’re not quite 1970’s prices, you absolutely get your bang for your buck. You can get any hot or cold sub sandwich for under $10, or half of any sandwiched on “The Big Ones” menu. And in full honesty, half of one of “The Big Ones” is the equivalent of one normal sandwich- but for $5 more you can get the other half and have a meal for later!
5) Taqueria El San Luis- 7094 Hodgson Memorial Dr.
This selection is last, but certainly not least! Everything on their menu (sans the shrimp burrito) is under $10. This place has such a great atmosphere. When you walk in and hear that Banda music playing, you know you’re in for a delicious meal. I’ve worked my way through this menu, enjoying the chicken, asada, and shrimp quesadillas, tortas, and burritos. The green and red sauces are both delicious. I always do mild red, hot green. Adding a glass bottle of Coca-Cola will put you over $10, but it’s worth it to have a fully balanced meal. They’re friendly and fast! There’s no online website or ordering but once you know what you like, it’s easy to call ahead to order!
I hope to find more options like this in the Savannah area and add them to my list! Meanwhile, if you’re in Savannah, give one of them a try. If you’re passing through, they’re hopefully spread out enough to grab from the highway, and if Savannah isn’t your style, love the small businesses you have that are cranking out delicious meals for their community! Until next time, I wish you good meals with good company.
